The sounds of machinery in the neighborhood alerted me to the fact that my neighbor was pruning her trees. Unfortunately, this magical little hummingbird nest was a casualty. No birdy lives were lost, but those hummers were maaaad!

The nest is about two inches in diameter and tightly affixed to the cedar twig. It is built from lint, wiry white hairs, lichens, and bits of moss. Inside, there are the remains of a hatched egg.

My neighbor plans to keep the nest as a curiosity. I hope to get another opportunity to photograph it in more optimal conditions.

It's a magical work of art! After all the effort that went into its creation, it's no surprise that the hummingbirds were mad. I'm glad no hummingbirds were injured but it's too bad the birds don't have a nest to accommodate a second brood this spring.
I once found a hummer nest blown into my back garden after a particularly windy day. It's such a sweet work of art. You took some great shots of it.
Hi Kris, I know--I, too, feel bad for the birds. It's a good thing that the tree got trimmed, though, before our big wind storm today. Their branch might have come down regardless...
Hi Alison, Thanks! I've been looking around our property for hummer nests. I know that they must be here--maybe in my other neighbor's ancient cherry--but I have yet to find one.
Any fool knows not to mess with an artist. I have never spied the nests our hummingbirds call home.
Ricki--I know that there are more nests, but I have not yet spied them!
