It's that lurid time of year again, when the bright rose flowerheads of Sedum "Autumn Joy" compete for attention with the orange and yellow tones of autumnal foliage. It's my least favorite time to view the sedums. Although, I don't know why I blame them so exclusively--the hydrangeas present sunset leaves and raspberry bloom on the same plant. It's probably a result of density/concentration of color.
(I took these photos in the evening with loooong exposures to gather enough light--they look dusky because it was!)
In the foreground, the newly planted portion of the rockery features darker purple foliage and dense, low-growing plants. |

The dusky lighting gives a mysterious air that I find compelling.
Thanks, Ricki. I liked the lighting too.
The colors look good to me in the dusky light, Emily. Although there no children in my household and few to no trick-or-treaters in my neighborhood, I've been thinking about hauling out my limited array of Halloween decorations too - from a decorating perspective, Halloween is much more fun than Thanksgiving.
Hi, Kris--thanks! I think my unease with the color does stem from the density. I'm thinking about picking some of the sedum--that will lighten-up the look AND I'll have something for a vase.
Usually I put seasonal decorations out only a week or 10 days in advance, so this is pretty early for me. I'm only comfortable with the most modest and "tasteful" display (ha--a tasteful Halloween!) but with little boy in the family, I predict that it will get crazier every year.
I love your Halloween banner! And the colors in that Hydrangea, wow! Your front garden looks lovely.
Thanks, Alison! The garden is finally starting to come together. First there were just the framework plants and then I started to add layers and density, and, just the other day, I received my order of bulbs from John Scheepers and I was wandering around with a bag of bulbs and a trowel thinking, "where the heck am I gonna find space to get these things planted." SO, FINALLY, it is starting to look full. FINALLY.
